Jesus cleanses the temple

John 2, 13-22

WHAT IS THE PASSOVER? THE PASSOVER IS A FEAST. A LAMB IS KILLED AND EATEN. THE PASSOVER IS NOW CELEBRATED.

THE PASSOVER TAKES PLACE IN JERUSALEM. JESUS COMES TO JERUSALEM. HE WALKS TO THE TEMPLE.

THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE AT THE TEMPLE. THEY ARE SELLING CATTLE, SHEEP AND DOVES.

JESUS MAKES A WHIP WITH SOME PIECES OF ROPE. JESUS FORCES ALL THESE MEN AND ANIMALS TO LEAVE THE TEMPLE. HE ALSO TURNS OVER THE TABLES.

JESUS SAYS TO THE MEN: „STOP! TAKE THESE THINGS OUT OF HERE! THIS IS NOT A PLACE FOR BUYING AND SELLING! IN THE TEMPLE YOU SHOULD PRAY TO GOD!“

THE FRIENDS OF JESUS ARE ASTONISHED. THEY SAY: „JESUS TRULY LOVES GOD. THIS IS THE REASON WHY HE IS SO UPSET!“

THE JEWS SAY TO JESUS: „YOU SAY THESE THINGS SHOULD BE TAKEN OUT OF THE TEMPLE. WHY SHOULD YOU BE ALLOWED TO SAY THIS? SHOW US A MIRACLE TO PROVE THAT YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY THIS!“

JESUS ANSWERS: „DESTROY THIS TEMPLE! I WILL BUILD IT UP AGAIN IN THREE DAYS!“

THE JEWS SAY TO JESUS: „YOU WANT TO BUILD THIS TEMPLE UP AGAIN IN THREE DAYS? THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE! YOU CANNOT DO THIS! PEOPLE WORKED 46 YEARS TO BUILD THIS TEMPLE!“

WHEN JESUS SAID ‚THE TEMPLE‘, HE MEANT HIS OWN BODY.

HIS FRIENDS LATER REMEMBERED: „YES! AFTER THREE DAYS, JESUS REALLY ROSE FROM THE DEAD!
